handmade paper mache fairies

The paper mache fairies are handmade by artist Jean Shackelford.  Each is built up over an armature and coated with layers of rice paper and glue.  Paperclay is applied over the figures which are then painted and glazed.  Faces are made of hydrocal, painted, airbrushed and glazed.  Once the faces are attached the figures are ready to decorate.  Up to 50 assorted elements might be used on one fairy.  Fabrics, yarns, feathers and a variety of exotic trinkets embellish the figure.
